The Fifth Version

You are given four versions of the same night.

In the first, two people carried a body toward the swamp.

In the second, there was only one.

In the third, three people were there.

And in the fourth, the body may still have been alive.

Now decide what happened.

The storm was violent. Visibility was poor. The ground was mud and black water. Everyone was frightened. Everyone had something to lose.

And everyone remembers the night differently.

A husband.

A wife.

A mercenary with his own rules.

A man who prefers to stand outside the story and decide which pieces everyone else gets to see.

Four people.

Four motives.

Four versions.

Maybe five.

At first, you will do what everyone does.

You will choose the account that sounds most convincing.

You will decide who is lying.

You will decide who is afraid.

You will decide who killed whom.

And then one detail will stop fitting.

A watch.

A voice.

A body moved in darkness.

A person who should have been somewhere else.

A memory that changes depending on who is telling it.

So you go back.

You read the scene again.

And suddenly the version you trusted begins to look constructed.
